The third week of the trainee program started with our final plant visit on the Ohio tour. Half of the cohort visited Mason and the other half went to Massillon where we got to immerse ourselves in manufacturing operations one last time before we find out where we’re headed in a few weeks.
On Wednesday, back at PPG, we dove into the supply chain and sales and operations planning functions. We learned the inner workings of supply and demand planning as well as transportation and procurement through an afternoon of shadowing those groups in PPG. These important functions are what keep the factories running and the sales people selling.
The week culminated with a supply chain case study of an issue directly related to a problem many food companies are currently having. Our job was to problem solve and come up with a solution. Overall this case study was a great tool for us to get insight into the types of problems faced by procurement every day.
