Corporate Management Trainee Program Week 6 2017

My name is Megan and I’m one of the new Corporate Management Trainees here at Kraft Heinz.

As I write this our cohort is in our last week of formal training before we start our first rotational project. What does the last week mean? Finance week. What does that mean for a marketing major like myself? Terror.

Don’t get me wrong, I love excel and data immensely. There is just something about finance that never quite clicked with me. However, this week opened my eyes. A P&L is a lot more engaging when it’s for mac and cheese and Planter’s Peanuts. Employees from all over came to talk to us – from our US CFO to former finance-oriented CMTs who got lunch with us today, to everyone in between.

To practice our new skills, we had a ZBB (zero based budgeting) finance case today. We were given data on travel expenses. Our goal was to save the company 20% in the next 6 months. After hearing from so many inspiring finance leaders, I was ready to tackle the case with my team. During our three hours of work, the case started tackling back. Our judges surprised us with changes to the case and the data seemed to get more and more dense as we worked. Luckily, my brilliant team (Martin, Joao, Rebecca, Ava, and Curtis – you are rock stars) pulled our strengths and came up with a plan that led us to win the case. It was the perfect way to showcase my new appreciation for finance!

That case showcases exactly what I love about this company and program. The people here are driven by a passion for curiosity. A case may seem impossible, finance week may seem hard, but all of us are so eager to learn and push forward that none of it stops us. I have never had so much fun learning in my life. I cannot wait to start working with these amazing people, now my new amazing friends, who inspire me every day.
